Error disk not ejected properly MacOS Sierra
I have three external disks plugged in on a Mac for data and backup. I suddenly get an error message for one of the disk that the "disk did not eject properly". The message will pop up on a regular. Any idea how to correct it?
Make sure the hard disk drive is either connected directly to the Mac or through a powered hub. Try a different USB port, as well as a different USB cable.
If nothing helps you have reason to suspect the drive may be faulty, and the only solution is to replace it.
An SMC Reset is justified for that problem: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support. Try it.
I've tried the process without any success. As an addition to my problem, my external hard drive shut down. No more light... So should I assume that the hard drive is dead? and the problem was not with the Mac nor the MacOs?
And the light just came back again...! And it's now visible on Finder.. Must be the weather. I am at lost ...
Correction the External Hard Drive went off...
After a few minutes the External Hard dDrive (d2 Quadra USB 3.0) will turn on and the sequence will start all over again.
Make sure the hard disk drive is either connected directly to the Mac or through a powered hub. Try a different USB port, as well as a different USB cable.
If nothing helps you have reason to suspect the drive may be faulty, and the only solution is to replace it.
Worked for me and was very simple. Thanks!

There are many discussions about "disk not ejected properly" dating back years. Hardware and OS version vary, but the problem occurs mostly with USB-connected hard drives. Some people see the problem intermittently, some all the time. Some suggested fixes work for some people, but not for others.
The mixture of symptoms speaks of some kind of race condition between disk sleep and OS sleep with various combos of hardware and OS. Apple presumably relies on third-party vendors to test their own hardware. That's a lot of testing, possibly requiring firmware updates for the drives. It's not surprising that older drives or hubs don't work completely with new editions of Mac OS of new Mac hardware don't work completely. Drive vendors will concentrate on new drives working with new Macs, not all possible combinations of new/old.
Not that that helps you fix your problem.
In my case, Preferences > Energy Saver > uncheck Put hard disks to sleep when possible solved the problem
+ external drive: WD My Book 2TB with Firewire and USB interfaces
+ previous setup: 2009 iMac; WD drive connected by Firewire cable to Mac Firewire port; default sleep settings => no problems through years of operation; disk completely asleep when Mac sleeps (LED off during Mac sleep)
+ new setup: 2017 iMac; WD drive directly connected via USB cable to Mac USB port => intermittent "disk not ejected properly" warnings; sometimes ejected the disk, which is a pain in the butt; no data loss or other problems detected by Disk Utility
+ fixed new setup: as noted, changed disk-sleep preference => no errors. The disk interface now appears to be powered constantly (LED at least slowly blinking all the time), but the drive itself spins down after a period of inactivity (LED goes from solid on or fast blinking due to access to slow blinking, and drive is quiet)
Why does the disk-sleep change help? No way to know for sure, but it probably causes the disk to always respond to the OS, both when it is going to sleep and waking up. Then the exact order in which sleep/wake activities happen no longer matters.
