Wifi always searching while connected

I have 10.10.4 on my MBA and while I do get connected to wifi, the graphic shows otherwise.  While it is annoying it seems wrong because known networks don't show up in the list since the graphic doesn't think it is connected.  I have reseted the PRAM, deleted system configuration files rebooted several times to no avail.  Is there anything I should do to get this working fine?

My route is a time capsule and my MBPr shows connection fine as does both my iPads and iPhones.  I even tried tethering to my iPhone and it shows the same thing.

Any ideas what to do?

Thanks.

Okay I fixed it.

I ran Disk Utility repair permissions, deleted the keychain stored passwords for the wifi networks, and rebooted.  It now lists wifi correctly, stops animating, and now show up in my preferred network lists.  thanks all that helped.

System Preferences/Network - does the Wi-Fi show as connected there?

It does show it is connected, just the animation shows it is still searching.  Therefore, the known network list is also completely empty so I am unable to delete it other than deleting the plist files.

Just an update.  Every so often it shows not connected/no internet but yet it still has an IP address, still works as described.  It appears to be only cosmetic however, any network I add, it won't be added to the preferred network list as a result.

I saw that a couple of times during the beta testing (and reported it). It just seemed to go away on its own after a while.

At least once I removed the WiFi menu from the status menu area, then put it back and it stopped throbbing.

I have the same problem on three machines, one iMac and two MBs. The iMac is on Yosemite while the other two are on Lion. The menu bar WiFi shows "Looking for networks" continually and presents a long list of networks that it has found in the neighbourhood.

On wake up the iMac WiFi stalls out at times which requires that I turn WiFi off and then on to reconnect. It actually shows connected during that period, but it isn't. Both Mail and Safari are unable to access the network.

Network Preferences shows that everything is rosy, but it's not. One MB is now non-functional on the network and must be connected by wire. I've had this problem on the other MB for quite some time, yet over the past few months, the problem disappeared on its own. Now it's plaguing the iMac.

Any ideas?

That is normal and what it is supposed to do when you pull down the menu.

That is apparently common problem that Apple has apparently been trying to fix in every update, as far as I can tell. There should be quite a few other threads on that topic. Neither of what you describe is what jweinraub is experiencing.

Interesting that after removing the WiFi status from the menu bar, my connection speed has just gone way up. If it's constantly searching for networks, I'm assuming that performance issues can occur. I'll monitor this to see if the connection speed and reliability remain improved.

It isn't constantly searching for networks. It searches when you ask it to by dropping down the menu.

Well something is constantly stalling out my connection speed and causing failure to connect on wake up. Other websites discussing this issue point to the WiFi status as being the problem.

What do you mean about status?  When I go into the network settings page it does indeed show connected with an IP address, yet the animation is seeking and it never gets added to the preferred networks.  I've restarted networkings numerous time but i cannot forget the network since OS X thinks it was never added.  Even with the latest Yosemite update it seems to be the last one, this is almost, well it is inexcusable of apple not to fix these things.  the fact it isn't adding the network tells me it is more than cosmetic.

I am sure when I do eventually upgrade to El Capitan the problem in theory should go away, or if I were to do a non-destructive reinstall of OS X.  It seems unfathomable to me why this is still a bug.  I've googled countless times and found quite a few with the issue, but no real solutions other than reinstall to upgrade.

That's a bit different that what I saw. Mine was purely cosmetic. It would happen only when I woke from sleep, but it was connected as you stated before. Is your s actually not connecting? Or, is it connecting, but not remembering it.

Is it set to remember networks you have joined? If so, try toggling it off then back on.

The cosmetic graphic shows its connecting.  Settings shows it is actually connected.  Shows I have an IP address.  It shows my SSID on the list since it is saved but the list of known networks is completely empty.  So I have no way of deleting it unless I delete the plist/configs from the terminal.  It at times even shows no internet yet it still works.

That's what I thought you stated the first time. It is connected, the connection graphics just get stuck on. I believe that graphic is just showing that it is trying to connect, not searching for a network. It shows a connection and the signal strength of the connection. The moving lines indicate it is trying to connect and should go solid when connected. It just occasionally doesn't stop the connecting graphic when it should.

I reported it on 10.10.1, and haven't seen it since that was released.

I have my MBPr connect no problem on the same network.  Never seen this before.  If you go by the graphic, its not connected if it weren't the fact the internet actually works.  My graphic on the MBA eventually does stop but it gets the exclamation point yet still works.  I just dont get why the one spot shows its not connected or still trying to do so yet the other spot it actually is.  There has no be some setting that is incorrect.  I guess at this point I need to wait for El Capitan.
