iCloud "Desktop and Documents" on 2 macs?

Anyone try turning iCloud "Desktop and Documents" on two computers? Wonder what happens, all documents from both machines in iCloud and each computer?

all documents from both machines in iCloud and each computer?

Yes, the Desktop and Documents folder will appear in the iCloud section of the Finder sidebar and sync between all devices that are using iCloud Drive.

It is working well between my Macs.

Desktop and Documents will also appear in iCloud Drive at www.icloud.com.

The previous content of the Desktop folder from each Mac will be moved to a subfolder of Desktop and called "Old Desktop - computer name", similar for the Documents folder.

No, and I'll tell you why...

Before turning this option on, use Finder to calculate the size of your Desktop and your Documents folder. Then check how much storage you have in iCloud or review how much you want to buy (see iCloud storage plans and pricing - Apple Support). Finally, review your internet connection and see what your upload speed is and what your bandwidth caps are.

For me, I would have to pay $13/month to Apple for the rest of my life. Assuming perfect connectivity, the first two months would be spent uploading data. I would then have to pay a fairly significant amount of extra money for going that far over my bandwidth allocation.

A good point, etresoft, since uploaded Documents and Desktop folders will not be merged during the first upload, but just sitting side-by-side in iCloud as subfolders of Documents.

I used the opportunity to clean up the Desktops and the Documents folders and moved most of the contents to local folders in my user home folders on each Macs to keep the documents local that I do not need on all Macs.  Only selected folders have been left on the Desktop and in the Documents folders to sync to iCloud, before I enabled the sync option for the Desktop and Document folders.

Yes, pretty much. Think about the manner in which iCloud drive works with ios devices - certain apps can be enabled to automatically backup files to iCloud drive, and you may also manually upload a file to iCloud drive. The concept is pretty much the same with OS X Sierra's new option to upload the files from your documents and desktop folders automatically to iCloud drive.

Hi Léonie, all,

I turned it on my second mac and it merged the desktop and document folder as you said, although Apple says the complete opposite on their site -it even shows a picture with an embedded desktop folder of the second computer (text and photo on link below).  I wanted this to happen rather than merge everything.  Is this just a gross misstatement on their site?

Thanks,

Gyve

Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support

"You can organize and combine folders from multiple Macs when you turn on Desktop and Documents on those computers. After you turn on Desktop and Documents on a second Mac, you'll find its files in folders with the same name as your second Mac inside your original Desktop and Documents folders. You can combine them manually, but iCloud doesn’t automatically merge the files in case you want to keep them separate. Any edits you make are automatically updated in iCloud Drive. There’s no need to manage your folders and files again on your other devices."

My Two Macs had GB's of data merged into one iCloud Root Folder.

This iCloud account did not make a separate Docs and DT folder as was expected and shown in their Apple Support online webpage concerning this feature.

Another, second iCloud Account that I used did however create a separate Docs and DT folder for each Mac under the iCloud Root Drive Folder for every computer I was logged into with the secondary iCloud email.

Apple said my data was lost, basically nothing they can do. I have been working on this support case for almost a year and it took almost that long to get a definitive answer about the possibility of any data recovery.

Multiple logs and data were submitted to the engineers for analysis. They have never got back to me about a solution, reason, prognosis, etc. All communications is filtered through the Apple Support reps. Its like paying the phone game but its really one way. To have zero input/advice from the engineers in almost a year it really disheartening.

The Apple Support team is great but they can only do so much, and in this case just collect logs and wait, and wait, and wait.

USE AT OWN RISK
