Backup Failed so did Apple ID Verification

A few days ago I brought a new iPad (5th Gen 2017), in the process of syncing the old (4th Gen) to the new, I lost my Notes. When I rang Apple Support the guy I spoke to said he could get them back by performing a restore from an old iTunes backup as they weren't in the iCloud either, but this would erase all the data on the old iPad. Since I'm getting rid of it anyway I was happy to do this but wanted to be sure I had everything I needed from it first.

I rang ang back today and the technician I spoke to this time took a different approach. He kept on putting me on hold to check what to do. This is ok but it gave me the impression he didn't know what he was doing. After the backup was underway we ended the call (70+ minutes at this point). He left me instructions as to what to do once the process was completed. I went away, only to find the backup had failed anyway.

Reluctant to ring back yet again, I tried to restore the backup on my own. Not only did the backup repeatedly fail so did my Apple ID verification. I kept getting error messages saying that my ID could not connect to the Apple server. What is going on? As I said, I don't want to call back again so I figured I'd email Apple and at least let them know or get some advice. I could not find a single email address, only feedback forms That don't allow detailed explanations.

I've given up trying to recover my note, it simply shouldn't be this hard. All I want is a few notes that were important to me. It seems no one with 'experience' has got a clue how to perform a simple restore. And now I can't even erase the data from my old iPad. I'm starting to regret not replacing it with an android device.

For the record I tried a number of online restore programs that claim to get lost stuff back. These did find some old notes I'd deleted years ago but not the ones I wanted. Additionally once the scan is completed, they all wanted a fee to get the information. I cannot justify around $50USD simply to get a few notes That shouldn't have been lost in the first place.

I'm annoyed that Apple were no help. How can one tiny issue be so complicated? And in trying to fix it I can't even verify my ID anymore! Frustrating does begin to describe it!

Hi

Turn ipad off

Make sure your pc is running the latest iTunes 12.6.2

Connect lead to USB on your pc

Press & hold just the power button down on ipad don't let go

Connect lead to ipad keep power button pressed down until pc sees ipad Then wait for restore you may need to do this more than once Before it works.

If it doesn't work make an appointment at Apple store take proof of purchase.

Cheers

Brian

Ps let me know if this works.

Thanks I'll give it a try. Are these institutions to erase all data or to recover my notes?

Thanks in advance

Hi Brian

Sadly your instructions didn't work. At that point I gave up and started to prepare my Gen 4 iPad to be erased so that I can sell it. As I was going through this process I noticed it said 'do you want to restore iPad to an older update. I choose the oldest one and went through the restore process... and it worked! My notes were there!

I quickly emailed them to myself and set about wiping it again.

I can't believe Apple didn't just tell me to do this in the first place. As long as you have everything backed up, it's so easy. It might be a very long way around the problem but at least it worked.

Thanks for your help

Cheers

Kellie
