mac mini hdmi sound output broken in high sierra

Recently upgraded from OSX 10.10.5 to High Sierra. After the upgrade, sound output via HDMI to the TV is gone. In System Preferences > Sound, the output device has disappeared from the list, leaving only "Internal Speakers".

So far I tried restarting, zapping PRAM, disconnecting/connecting the cable again to get the mac mini to recognize the TV properly. All to no avail. (image output does work btw)

It's a Mac Mini Mid 2010. Needless to say, before the OS upgrade HDMI sound output worked perfectly.
