can i upgrade os x 10.8.5 to mac os sierra

hey friends i am using mac book pro (2010) os x 10.8.5 … i want upgrade os x .. can i upgrade to latest version or their is a proper way to do  ?? and also should i have to take back up first

According to Apple's specs, if your Mac Pro is a mid-2010 model, you should be able to upgrade to Sierra:

You should absolutely make a backup to Time Machine before upgrading.
