Online diagnostics negative, iMac still exhibit...

Apple  diagnostics indicate everything is fine.

Some apps sometimes refuse to shut down, geometrical shapes form on the screen without much distorting the content, this Apple has always been slower than a slug - much slower than a 2008 iMac I still have.

Beachball appears at least momentarily in 70% of operations, often hangs for long periods doing the same simple operations that never cause an issue in spouse’s 2012 iMac.

  Will  the local Apple Store have better diagnostics available then the online service?

A 2013 Mac that is "slower than a slug" tends to indicate you have installed system modifications that are not compatible with the OS you are running.

You may have also inadvertently installed Adware. Etrecheck will identify those, also.

Yes. Over the counter Apple  service is much more comprehensive. It sounds familiar like your GPU is failing.
