password required to enable apple watch to unlo...

I can successfully use my Apple Watch to login to my MacBook (13-inch, Late 2013, MacOS 10.12.2), but occasionally I get this message:

"password required to enable apple watch to unlock this mac"

which forces me to enter a password.

Subsequent logins appear to work fine, but then I'll comeback some time later and I'll have to use my password again. I tried canceling the login and retried thinking the watch didn't have time to communicate with the mac, but this did not work. Thoughts?

Apple Watch is up to date running watchOS 3.1 (1st gen)

I have the exact same issue on my 27" iMac (the new one released in June, Mac OS 10.12.6). Happens like once every 5 attempts or so.

It's a minor annoyance but since it completely defeats the purpose of unlocking with the watch, it's probably something that should be addressed.
