iMac 27 had used to be frozen all the time untill

as i have read related posts here, i'm getting more and more  close to the idea that it is most likely a damage of the SATA cable. however, i  have a question: i could connect it to my macbook pro via the thunderbolt in target mode, and could see it in the Finder or Disk utility from there. nothing good came out of it though. but this made me think could this still be the SATA  cable, maybe? i mean, when two macs are being connected via thunderbolt, am i really using the SATA cable? thanks in advance!
