createinstallmedia not working

This should be simple.  The end goal is to create a bootable install media for installing El Capitan.  I want to use it both in Parallels or wiping and loading a MacBookPro.

I have tried various forms of this script several times on my iMac (3.1 MHZ ~ Late 2012) and my MacBookPro.  Here is the script:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath "/Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app"

Or:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/ElCapInstaller --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction

Neither of these scripts produce something that is bootable.  I'm basing that on 2 tests: 1) System Preferences, Startup Disk does NOT see it and 2) Immediately press and hold the Option key. at boot time does NOT see the disk.

This is a repeatable situation either on a USB Flash Drive (16GB) or a USB Disk (500GB). Both have been formatted with the Disk Utility as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Partition Map Scheme of GUID Partition Table.

Further, I've even tried "Diskmaker X 5".  Nothing seems to create a bootable disk.

I'm reasonably sure that it is something not only simple but also Stupid, but I can't figure it out.  Please Help.  Thank you in advance:

Bob Browning

Be sure you have first a properly prepared flash drive: use Disk Utility to partition and format the flash drive using Mac OS Extended, Journaled. If you had no success using the Terminal method (should work, however,) then try using DiskMaker X 5.0.1. I have created bootable flash drives using each method, so I know they work. The correct command line for using then Terminal is:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath "/Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app"

Be sure to copy the entire command.

Your example is exactly one of the ones I used.  Alas, it does NOT achieve the desired results.  Also, in the same request for help above I stated that the Diskmaker 5.01 did not work either, again on either of my machines.

thank you anyway, for your response and help.  I believe that further research is in order

Both methods do work. I don't know why you are having a problem with either. Sorry.

I have no doubt that both methods do work, it is just in my environment neither works for me. I even tried pointiby Parallels at the "Install El Capitan" but that failed for me as well. The Terminal and interface even states that it copied the bootable files yet still the device on either my iMac and my MacBookPro will not boot.

PLease help.

Thank you.

One suggestion is that you reinstall El Capitan on your computer, preferably from scratch, then try creating a bootable flash drive. It is possible that the failure is related in some way to your current system. You might prefer trying this with the computer you have the least immediate need for since this is time consuming. You would need to start with backing up the computer, if needed. Then go through the process of erasing the drive and installing El Capitan from a fresh download from Apple (in case the problem lies in the copy you now have.) Once accomplished then try making the flash drive.

I wish I had more for you, but I don't know what more to suggest except different flash drive makes. Perhaps the ones you have just won't work. I once had that problem on an older Mac with Kingston flash drives. They would not make bootable backups even though other makes did just fine. I don't know why that was the case. I had an i3 iMac that would not recognize a particular model of a PNY flash drive. Older models of the exact same make and model worked fine, but the new ones were just not recognizable on it. But they worked on my other Macs. Go figure.

Many thanks. I have one other opportunity ... My wife has a brand new (little used) 27" iMac w/Retina. I'll do a fresh download and try it there with different media. Put it n a good word for me if you have any influence

THank you.

Consider it done.

OK, in the world of "Believe It Or Not", I used my wife's 27" iMac running current version of Yosemite, downloaded a fresh version of El Capitan, and using a correctly formatted 32gig USB, then ran your script ... no way jose .... No boot files were present on the USB.

I Need some help here.  Everything changed; the computer, a fresh download and a never used USB.  The results are exactly the same: no boot files!

Help!!!

BobB

Again, in the realm of "Believe it or not!" I downloaded a fresh "Install El Capitan.app" on my 27" iMac.  Used a new USB 3.0 32G Flash drive and ran the terminal script:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath "/Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app"

When it was finished, I went to System Preferences > Startup Disk and NOTHING.  Yosemite 10.10.5 cannot see the USB drive.

Reading on in this forum, I saw someone said Try holding the Control (Alt) key and booting ... guess what!  The USB drive is visible and is now loading my MBP with El Capitan

More to follow when I get more info.  Thanks to all who post here.  Wading through is very beneficial

Thanks,

Bob

I was under the impression or may have even posted that you need to use OPTION boot in order to boot from the USB. I thought you were aware of that given what you had earlier posted. So, I must apologize for such a bad assumption on my part. I should have clearly asked early on and saved you a lot of unnecessary work. I'm so sorry.

Thanks, Kappy, I almost have things working.  One issue that I figure I had was some corrupted "Install OS X El Capitan.app".  I used that on both my iMac and my MacBook Pro.  Something was hosed in that file.  Once I downloaded a fresh copy AND used the OPTION key , things worked a lot better.

However, there seems to still be an issue that keeps me from being right with things ... this USB does boot (again with the OPTION key) but does NOT give me any of the "normal" startup features such as "Utility", and there are a couple or three things else that is missing.  It does, produce an "Upgraded" install, not a "clean" install.  I will wander down that pathway for a while looking for my missing "utilities".

I do want to say THANK YOU VERY much for sticking with me.  I really appreciate it.  You can tell your "boss" I said thanks very much.

One last thing; I even though this USB drive does load an upgraded install, the device is NOT visible on the System Preferences > Startup Disk.  I guess that I believed that if it didn't show up in Startup Disk, it wouldn't boot.  Maybe my logic is a tad faulty.

Again, thank you very much!

Bob B

Not sure if it's meaningful after two years, but ...

I had exactly the same problem when using the createinstallmedia command, so I tried to use diskmaker 5.0.3, and it worked. I have no idea why, but that's what happened.
