Startup key commands not working on iMac with f...

Hey everyone,

Today my hard drive started making the dreaded "click of death" noise. I immediately shut down and went out to get a new external drive to back up my data. When I turned the computer back on, I got the flashing folder with a question mark, indicating that it wasn't finding the os. I did a hard restart and attempted to boot in recovery mode, but nothing happened. I just got a white screen. So I restarted again, holding the option key to try and see my drive and again, nothing. Same thing with internet recovery mode. I haven't tried target disk mode yet as I don't have a thunderbolt cable, but I plan on getting one and using my MacBook to recover data.

Any ideas on what the problem might be? I should still be able to use some of these commands, even if the drive has failed, correct?

It's a 2011 iMac. I just updated to the latest version of OS X a couple weeks ago, so I'm running whatever that is.

Also, I don't know if this is relevant to the start up issues or not, but the hard drive seems to be making a very subtle beeping noise. It's not the kind of beep you hear when the head is stuck. It's quieter, lower in pitch and much less frequent, occurring maybe every 3-5 seconds.

Thanks in advance for any help!
