Split view with new document replacing one side

Hi there:

I have only just been able to get Split View to work for me and was all excited until I couldn't figure out how to change one of the documents while keeping the other.

I am doing some personal bookkeeping using bank statement pdf's opened in Preview on one side and Banktivity's ledger opened on the other. Works great until I need the next month's pdf! I tried Preview's menu File>Open> but it opened the document in my original Space leaving the original split documents in their own Space.

Is there a simple way to swap a document out within the same app using the same split arrangement?
