God awful "lava lamp" background in iCloud

How can I change the horrible wandering blobs in iCloud?

Never seen anything like that, what exactly are you referring to.

iCloud has a steel blue-gray background with these lighter colored balls wandering around--presumably this is someone's idea of clouds moving in the sky. I can't stand to look at it--I want to change the background.

ICloud is a service that works in the background on your Mac, there isn't really anything to see, I don't know what you are referring to, do you have a screen shot.

file:///Users/2013iMac/Desktop/Screen%20Shot%202013-11-18%20at%2012.34.12%20PM.p df

The animated background to the iCloud.com Home Page can't be changed.

If you want to post a screenshot, click the camera icon in the toolbar and navigate to the image on your Mac, which must be a jpg or a png. It's no good posting a file:// link which is purely local to you.

file:///Users/2013iMac/Desktop/Screen%20Shot%202013-11-18%20at%2012.31.19%20PM.p ng

What you are posting is a link to a file actually on your computer: it's not accessible to anyone except you (nor would you want it to be). You need to use the camera icon in the toolbar where you write your post.

But there's no need; your 'lava lamp' is clearly visible at https://cloud.com once logged in. As I say, there is (AFAIK) no setting to change it.

As far as I can tell, the wandering blobs are not a major concern because they only appear when you are viewing the Home screen in iCloud. But you shouldn't be spending a lot of time on the Home screen in iCloud, mostly because there's not a lot do to there but look at the icons. You should be spending most of your time in the actual iCloud apps, Calendar, Reminders, Notes, etc. and when you are in those the blobs are not visible, you have just a blank background.

The floating blobs seem to mimic the default "dynamic wallpaper" background images in iOS 7 that shift around differently as you tilt or move your iOS device. I know this isn't iOS 7, but that seems to be what they're modeled after.

They're talking about icloud.com

Well, I'm so relieved someone has pointed that out. I've been worrying about what it was for the last four years since the question was asked.
