Why do I get verification codes on the same dev...

I have activated two-step verification. When I try to log into iCloud.com on my MacBook, I get the six-digit code on the same machine (even though I have an iPhone and iPad with the same iCloud account). Does this not defeat the purpose of two-step verification?

Two-step verification is designed to protect your Apple ID, not the device itself. The code is sent to all nominated devices which it is assumed are in your possession. It's expected that you will have set a passcode on your devices, so that even if, for example, you lose your phone, a malefactor wouldn't be able to get the code because he wouldn't be able to get into the phone. The system protects you from someone attempting to log into your iCloud account on their own device.
