Not very old, not much mileage on it. Slow, slo...

My iMac is a late 2013 iMac, 21.5 inch, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3. And it is is so very slow that I can hardly stand using it. I bought it brand new in 2015/2016?  Any ideas that may help me or were all of these bummers.  I have already purchased an external SSD 500TB drive and a USB3.  My older model, that I was using before this one, was 9 years old and worked much much faster, than this newer one. It was a 24 inch model if that makes any difference.

HELP.  HELP.  HELP.  HELP.

Please post an EtreCheck report of your system. We can then look for obvious issues. Please click the link, download the app and run the report. Once you have the report, please copy and paste it as your reply to this post.

Based on the information that I have, I can deduce two potential causes:

1. There is an issue with the software. Make sure you're running the latest version of the OS and all of your applications are updated. There may also be an issue specific to your Mac, and if updating the software and following the step below does not help, I'd contact Apple to see what they think.

2. You have third party software that is eating up a lot of RAM and CPU or your machine may be infected with a virus. If you have installed a lot of programs, that is most likely the reason. Open up the activity monitor application and see what programs or processes are taking up the most memory and CPU. If possible, you may want to delete these programs or quit them when not in use. If you don't see anything in particular, you may (though it's a long shot) have a virus. Grab some antivirus software and run a quick scan.

If neither of these are the issue, try contacting Apple.

Do as rfkaufman87 suggested and download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

I see you are running your 2013, 21 inch screen iMac from an external USB 3.0 SSD drive, now.

Smart move!!!!

However, if this is one of the base model iMacs with only 8 GBs of RAM, these older slimline 21 inch screen iMacs use the "so-called" integrated (soldered) Intel Iris ”Pro" GPUs, now!

Meaning that in any of the newer 21 inch screen model iMacs, if you get one with the max 16 GBs of RAM, a little bit to quite a bit of that installed RAM is being used for the GPU's VRAM!

Meaning that the GPUs in these newer 21 inch screen model iMacs is stealing away physical RAM, for use by the GPU, for the GPU's VRAM, that could be needed for any other possible RAM intensive tasks depending on the apps being used or what combination of apps is being used together.

The GPU will automatically steal whatever the amount of physical RAM the the GPU needs for any type GPU related task.

This would not be as big an issue if you could install more than 16 GBs (which there is no way to do this in these 2013-2015 , 21 inch screen iMacs as Apple has soldered every single component to the logic board).

The 2012-2015 baseline 21 inch screen iMac models only come with 8 GBs of RAM standard.

New versions of the Mac OS need a base MINIMUM RAM of 8 GBs, now.

So, 8 GBs of RAM is really not enough RAM to run both the OS AND any additional applications.

Especially the type of applications that are SERIOUS hardware resource intensive!

About macOS Recovery - Apple Support

Uninstall Sophos and CLeanMyMac as per the developer's instructions. No anti-virus or so-called "cleaning" apps are necessary or recommended for Mac OS. At best they will use unnecessary system resources and at worst will bork your Mac.

Your computer has a number of problems, first and foremost is Mac OS was designed to be extremely secure and safe and simply needs to be kept up to date for maintenance. Adding any antivirus, cleaning or ANY third party maintenance apps is completely unnecessary and potentially damaging to Mac OS.

Before you do anything, locate the uninstall process recommended by the developers of Sophos and uninstall the app. Do the same for CleanMyMac which is considered malware by most experienced users.

Your computer has a large number of Internet Plugins, I suspect many are totally unnecessary. Use Safari 8 (Yosemite): If you need to remove a plug-in to learn how to remove the plugins you do not need.

After you have performed these functions restart in Safe Mode and then restart normally and re-test.

CleanMyMac is worse than useless. Get rid of it now. Until you do, further troubleshooting is pointless.

Sophos will also cause more harm than good. Get rid of that, too.

If I understand you correctly all the apps that Sophos said were bad were brought in by Sophos so as to be able to report that to me?

I have gone thru and removed Clean My Mac 3.  Except it was so handy,  I guess I should just trust ETR Check huh?

My iMac has 16 GB of RAM. Also these models can only be upgraded with more RAM by someone with more courage than I have.  Thank you for your reply.

Yes, as stated uninstall both CMM and Sophos using the developers instructions. If you don't you likely will continue to have problems. After you have done this post a new EtreCheck report.

I did that and then ran ETR Check again. Here is the result.
