How can I get my iPhone to show up in Finder?
I recently upgraded my Mac to Sierra, and now when I plug in my iPhone it doesn't show up in Finder. It charges, but it's not listed under Devices, and I need it there so I can download photos.
Before the upgrade, I had to plug and unplug the iPhone two or three times before it showed up in Devices. Now, nothing changes, no matter how many times I try. I have an iPhone 6, and a Macbook Pro that's about a year and a half old.
I tried pressing Show/Hide; it's not there. I also tried Finder/Preferences, Show these items on the desktop, with External Disks and CDs, DVDs, and iPods checked.
I'm stumped. Please help.
To my knowledge, iPhones never showed in the Finder. You need a third party app to do so. If yours did show, your iPhone must have been configured somehow to do so.
iPods however do show under devices, or at least they do if configured as a hard drive for sure.
iTunes can be used to sync photos with other applications such as Photos. Photos do not show directly in iTunes.
Use Image Capture to download photos from your iPhone without using other photo applications such as Photos.
I've never seen the iPhone show up in the Finder. Did you mean iTunes by chance?
You should be able to use either Photos or Image Capture to download photos. Open up Image Capture in your application folder and you can manage your photos there.
You should also be able to access and manage photos in iTunes also. Your iPhone will show in the sidebar when connected either by WiFi or USB, depending on your settings.
Hmm. My iPhone has always been listed in Finder in the past, under Devices. And, my photos do not show up in iTunes, which I always found odd. I have never used Image Capture. I'm not a big fan of Photos so I'll see if I can figure that out--although I'd really rather just be able to drag the images I want from Finder to my desktop or my Pictures folder. Thank you.
There has never been a supported way to drag photos from an iPhone to the Mac via the Finder. The iPhone is not accessible via the Finder in any way. So if you were doing that you must have installed some 3rd party utility to enable it.
That is so odd. I don't even understand it, especially since I've added pretty much nothing to my Mac. But, both of you agree so clearly I have to move on. How do you download iPhone photos?

Imagine Capture worked beautifully. Thanks to both of you.
You can use Image Capture, or the Photos App to download photos from an iPhone.
Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
What you describe is how it works on Windows. It will appear as a digital camera in Windows Explorer, but to my knowledge it does not, nor has it ever worked that way on Mac.
Here's a follow-up question. I was able to download the photos easily. How do I then delete them from my iPhone using my Mac? I'd hate to have to sift through one by one on the iPhone.
You can delete them manually in the image capture window by selecting the photo or photos, right click and delete.
You can check the box to delete them from the phone also after importing.
You can also set the iPhone to open Image Capture automatically when connected to the computer. You can set the folder to download the photos to.
If the settings window isn't showing in the sidebar of Image Capture, click the icon at the bottom of the sidebar window of Image Capture.
You can delete them directly in Image Capture.
Select them, and click on the at the bottom of the Image Capture screen to delete them from the iPhone.
I've changed the settings so Image Capture will open. However, the deleting thing isn't going as well. When I right-click, the Delete option is grayed out. And, when I imported selected files, I couldn't find an option to delete after importing.
Can I get one more round of help? You are very generous to share your knowledge.
I don't see that delete doohickey at the bottom of the screen.
It should look like this:
Your window appears different. Not sure what's going on there. Do you have adminsitrative access to applications?
Also, you can delete photos more than one at a time on the iPhone. To do so, open Photos on the iPhone. Select the Camera Roll album. Select all photos to delete at one time in the window there and delete.
Yes, I agree mine looks different. If anyone has administrative access it's me, but I have no idea. As you may have guessed, I can use a computer but I'm not exactly ace at the details.
