TextEdit saving opening issues

First off: I have read the many threads about this and nowhere have I found a solution. The last I tried was this Unable to save TextEdit files | Macsolvers' Blog which seemed a worthy try, to remove the Preferences plist - but that did not work either.

Specifically, this happens on a very consistent basis. After I have TextEdit open for some period of time, today it was only 3.5 hours, I can no longer open existing .rtf files which I originally created with TextEdit, and I can longer save open TextEdit files that have not been saved yet (they are labeled as Untitled and have not been saved at all yet). I cannot open new documents either by double clicking in the finder or Control clicking Open. I can save edits to currently open .rtf files in TextEdit that have been saved and thus have a name.

It has bee like this for well over a year. Every now and then I get frustrated enough to take the time to look for a solution. Now is one of those time.

This problem happens on my iMac, but does not happen on my laptop.

In order to get it working again, I have to close TextEdit and open it again, (which means copying all content from unsaved documents somewhere so I can then add them to a new document when I restart TextEdit again).

An interesting and odd problem—

start with a simple running of Disk FirstAid on your MacintoshHD

Disk Utility for Mac: Repair a disk using Disk Utility

/Applications/Utilities/DiskUtility>FirstAid
