(com.apple.diskutility error 3.)

Trying to Replace a filled up, Mac Book Pro, 320 gig HHD with a 1 Tera byte HDD.

(com.apple.diskutility error 3.)

I am using Three HHD, One Internal and Two External HDD.

The above is the error message that I get when I want to restore from my external HHD, which has my time machine back up on it.  My Mac Book is a, late 2008 15 inch model, I want to change my hard drive, to a larger one because I have ran out of room over the years.  The good thing is that I stll have the original drive in an external enclosure.  I have two external drives,  One; the small portable which has my old internal, filled up drive in it.  Two; a larger external drive which has time machine back ups on it.  I have tried to use the, time machine backs, via the restore from the OS X 10.11 recover partition, which is from a recent OS X down loaded, "El Captian" 10.11.  I have also tried to restore from, "snow leopard Install disc", and the backups are not seen in the restore windows.

I have ran diskutility on all drives involved, ran disc first aid, ran repairs and fixes from older versions.  I have changed the operating systems from 10.5, to 10.6.8 snow leopard, to 10.11 El captian, to the destination HDD, (internal HDD) from the source drive 2 Tera external where the back ups are located.  I have tried to restore from each operating system, but they all can not see my back ups.  All the Operating Systems can see the drive that I have the back ups on, but I can not see the actual back up file, or the previous back up dated files.    In fact nothing shows up on the drive from the restore selection menu window.   I am using a wired 800 mb firewire cable to all my HDD, in a daisy chain fashion.

I am still not out of steps, to do.  I still have the orginal 320 HDD.  I can make an image of it, and try a restore from image too.  Also please note that my 320 HDD also has a windows 7, boot camp partition on it, with it.  I am treating that separately.  Once I get my mac system restored I will then work on the Windows 7 boot camp partition.  Right now I am focused on Mac side only.  Of course I have all the windows backup separately in the windows formated HDD external.  (technically you could say I have 4 HDDs)  lets not count the Windows formated drive for now.

My question is, " How do I see the Time Machine backups in restore menu window?"

Thank you!

Mike

P.S I always make another time machine backup, because I still have the orginial HDD.

The answer to this problem lies in creating a good image.

OS X: Creating a software deployment image with a recovery partition - Apple Support

This link has the answer, I am now on to my windows partition.

Here it is 2017, two years after the last such enquiry and Apple still dodging the answer, which is planned obsolescence.

Got Time Machine, got original disks, and your machine itself runs like a top.  Too bad because built in code doesn't allow for a fresh install if your unlucky enough to enjoy Snow Leopard.  The one work around that they suggest, is to buy a "retail" version of 10.6.3  Snow Leopard.  Well, fat chance I'm paying for something twice.  I've got other macs with other OS's and that's exactly why I want my Snow Leopard working as long as possible because the software and restrictions that come with later OS's pale by comparison.  And it's none of their concern regardless.  Fine if they don't support the old software just don't block me from using what I've already paid for.
