Why is Safari Favorites Bar malfunctioning?

Rearranging Favorites according to Apple Help instructions does not work. Soon as a Favorite is clicked it transforms immediately into an editable box that cannot be dragged. There is no delay during which it can be moved. This is maddening. What is the fix for this? MacBook Air running Sierra 10.12.6.

I understand you are trying to rearrange your Favorites in Safari.  I believe are accessing the Help menu and following these instructions?


Help > Browse the web > View Favorites
See all your bookmarks in the sidebar: Click the Sidebar button in the toolbar, then click the Bookmarks button . Or, choose Bookmarks > Show Bookmarks.

Rearrange your Favorites: Drag them to different locations.

 

I find the easiest way to work with Favorites (or any of your other Bookmarks) is to click on the sidebar button (icon above) so that you see your bookmarks in a list.  You may need to click on the arrow to the left of Favorites to expand and see the entire list.

Press and hold your mouse to drag a favorite website or folder to a different location on the list.  As you drag, you will see a blue horizontal line to indicate where it will be dropped when you release your finger.

The easiest way to rename or delete a favorite url or folder in this list is to right-click or Control-click.

Thank you for the excellent suggestion, Sterling but using the sidebar box does not work: Selecting there does not engage the drag feature either. Am working with Apple Support phone staff regarding it being a trackpad problem. The trackpad appears to be registering a single click as a double click, thereby proceeding instantly to Edit mode. Will detail resolution here when it occurs.

Any news on this? I'm having the same problem, and running out of hairs...

Other than resorting to a second browser of other name, I've had

no luck with odd issues in Safari. ~ My dad who'd lived in central

America jungles a few years, told me to be wary when on safari.

 

Don't suppose the 'favorites bar' may need to set out better snacks?
