2009 iMac running slow

A question that's been asked many times before - as per the title, an increasingly creaky late 2009 iMac is running slow. The system seems to get easily hogged, with for example the system crawling to a halt when Time Machine is running, and relatively small Time Machine backups sometimes taking over an hour. Every few months I'll have a bout of kernel panics and all kinds of things will crash randomly for a week or two, although that hasn't been a common problem lately. helpd does seem to crash at least a couple of times a day. Spotlight sometimes takes a long time, to the extent that I'll usually dig through Finder because it'll be faster.

By today's standards the RAM is quite low, and I'm planning/hoping to buy a new iMac soon, but until I do, is there much I can do to improve the current machine?

(I haven't updated to High Sierra yet, mainly because I usually wait for .1 versions, but also because I'm not sure if High Sierra is likely to help or hurt my situation.)

Thanks in advance!

There are a few ways of making an older Mac feel new.

The first, is to do a fresh install of Mac OS, this keeps things clean, removes apps that slow down the system but are no longer needed, and also stops the OS from being confused and cluttered, especially if you have multiple OS upgrades layered onto your machine without doing fresh installs each time a new OS is released (which is advised).

The second, is to upgrade the hardware, luckily, with older Macs you can easily upgrade RAM and, in some devices you can upgrade a HDD to an SSD (which offers huge performance boosts when generally running Mac OS, such is quicker boot-up times, as well as opening applications and faster file indexing in finder and spotlight.

I can see with the information you posted above, that over 30 processes are killed due to insufficient RAM. I highly suggest upgrading the RAM, even if its up to 8gb, Mac OS handles RAM efficiently, meaning that 8gb can potentially feel like 16gb, depending on your workload (I personally have 8gb of RAM installed on my MBP and use Logic Pro X daily for audio production and this works flawlessly).

I also suggest, that if you have the budget and confidence in replacing the HDD to an SSD, the latest Mac OS (high sierra) uses a new File System (APFS) designed specifically for machines with an SSD, this offers huge performance upgrades compared to the old HFS system which was introduced in 1985!

I hope this helps,

Thomas

Thanks - how much would work a fresh install be? I‘ve got good Time Machine backups (well, I hope they’re good; they haven’t been tested since the ... 2nd? ... internal hard drive failed a few years ago), plus I clone the drive with SuperDuper every couple of days. And I believe I’ve never done a fresh install, so yeah, that’d be seven or eight layers of OS upgrades over the years.

If I’m reading the spec pages EtreCheck links to correctly, I guess I could swap out one of the 1GB RAM with a 4GB - or 2x1GB with 2x2GB? I’m not sure how the economics on that would work out. I live in Taiwan, so the prices are going to differ as well ... my impression is that parts are more expensive here than in the USA, although labour is cheaper. Much cheaper. But you get what you pay for.

I think it’s unlikely I’ll go with an SSD. I am hoping to upgrade to a new computer within six months or so, so I don’t really want to invest too much money in the machine. I’m not so much seeking to preserve the life of the machine, but more to make our remaining months together as enjoyable as possible.

As you are planning on upgrading to a new mac, I suggest that you just try to reinstall Mac OS, and potentially add more RAM if needed.

Another tip is to go to settings > accessibility > display. Click reduce transparency and reduce motion. This puts less stress on the GPU making the mac feel a little faster

Hope this helps

For the time being until you know for sure you are purchasing a new Mac, I would install the max RAM into that iMac.

6 or 8 GBs of RAM is simply NOT enough RAM for today's Mac OSes and other tasks.

Mac OSes really need a functioning RAM amount of 8GBs, now!

I have the 27 inch screen version of this iMac year.

Install the full 16 GBs of RAM that this iMac model can take.

FYI if you end up keeping this iMac and NOT purchase a new one,

If you have never done ANY computer or Mac computer internal upgrades in your life, now is NOT the time to start.

iMacs have always, ALWAYS been designed to be NOT user friendly to service and have been designed to keep users from tampering/tinkering inside.

Replacing the internal HDD with an SSD is not a process for newbie or novice Mac users to do.

I am not sure where you would find these in Asia, but I went the plug and play route.

I purchased a FireWire 800 enclosed external, 480 GBs SSD for my 2009 iMac and for the last 6-7 months been booting and running my iMac from this drive.

Running an external SSD from the FW800 connection is proving to be running very well.

Because there are no moving parts in this setup, I am getting a nearly 10% data throughput boost of between 92 and 94 MBps OVER what should be FW800’s “top” 84 MBps throughput!

The response time over FW800 is near instantaneous and I don't “feel” any lag or delay, at all, from using this external SSD drive over FireWire.

My iMacs looks and feels as if it ACTUALLY is running faster over a FW800 coinection than my conventional 7200 RPM spinning hard drive running from my iMac's internal data bus.

By all accounts this drive should be performing slower from an external connection, but this is not the reality I have been dealing with.

My iMac really feels like a new iMac running from this external FW800 SSD.

Something to think about IF you can find one of these.

It's a much easier solution to deal with and you a getting a real world critique from someone who using one of these with this configuration.

I am from the U.S. and I purchased this external SSD drive from here, if your curious.

https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MEF3MSSD480/

This company has a 500 GBs version external SSD, now, that replaces their 480 GBs SSD they used to sell>

Again, I am not sure where you would be able to find something like this in Asia.

Good Luck to You whichever direction you end up deciding to do!
