How to install Sierra 10.12.6 on mac

I did a fresh install of mountain lion so I could download a piece of software. I'm trying to work my up back up to sierra, but not sure how, and I don't want to go to high sierra for fear of incompatibilities with certain software I have.

I did time machine back up before I did the downgrade. IS there a way I can pull sierra from that backup?

Only if the installer was on the backup.

It's not clear what you backed up with Time Machine, but whatever operating system that was would be restored if you were to restore from Time Machine. In other words if your Mac was running Sierra when you created that backup, then restoring it would restore Sierra. It would also remove what you downloaded.

It seems to me that you installed something that would only install under Mountain Lion, and it remains that Mac's operating system. If that is correct, upgrading to High Sierra will not remove it, assuming whatever that software is continues to work in High Sierra, notwithstanding the fact its installer may no longer work (due to SIP, for example).
