group messages split into different threads on ...

I have an iPhone 7, before that a 6S, and an iPad mini 4. For the last several months (running iOS 10.3 to 11.01 now) my group messages have been in one thread on my phone but split up by individual on my iPad. Has anyone else had this trouble? If so, how can I fix it?
