Is internet recovery hung?

My old iMac booted to the infamous folder with a blinking "?", so I restarted it, pressed Cmd+R, and started the internet recovery process. I saw the computer start some downloading process and walked away. Now when I look at the computer, the screen is all white except for an apple in the center. There isn't any sign of activity. The fan is running. The display is quite warm. It has been like this for 60+ minutes. I have a fast DSL connection.

Has the recovery process hung? Is this normal (just an apple and a very warm computer)? Should I power down, wait, etc?

Thanks!

Command + R is regular recovery; internet recovery is Command + Option + R.

What year/model is your Mac?

Older Macs (you said "my old iMac") cannot use internet recovery; they require the original install disks.
