Macbook volume stuck on mute after resetting de...

The Problem: My macbook's audio is fully stuck on mute with no output or input listings.

The Cause (I think...): This issue occurred immediately after I updated my default keychain access. I was not using headphones at the time, and I've never had this issue before. Maybe it's just a coincidence or it's the cause but either way I don't know enough about Macs to be sure. I've also noticed that my mac overheats more often now after the keychain update as well.

Fixes I've Tried:

  1. Restarting, rebooting
  2. Plugging headphones in and out
  3. Cleaning out the headphone jack
  4. Updating
  5. Force quitting coreaudiod
  6. Deleting "com.apple.BezelServices.plist"
  7. Resetting the SMC
  8. Resetting PRAM

None of these options worked even temporarily. The volume just remained compeltely unresponsive.

At this point I'm guessing I'll probably need to take it in, but I figured it was worth a shot.

Hi,

Try this: open Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup > see if input and output show up, and if so > select input and output one at a time and make sure they're not muted and the volume is turned up.

If they don't show up, post back.

Hi there,

No luck :/

This is what it looks like for me. Should output and input be in the left sidebar?

Yes, that's where they should be.

What's up with three different versions of After Effects?

I think it's time to bring the Mac to an Apple Store “genius” bar for a free diagnosis: https://support.apple.com/contact

Make sure to backup before going, as you always should.

I'm not sure - guess it kept all my old ones after I updated the program?

I figured as much. Thanks for trying!

Hope you'll post back with results.

Finally took it in - logic board is failing. Apple employee said that it would also be the cause for my programs unexpectedly quitting. He tried resetting the sound cables and doing a few sound tests, but my macbook kept lagging and wouldn't do the tests.

I didn't hand it in for repair because I can't afford the $475 / 4-5 day repair time (poor college student). Replacing it myself would also cost an arm and a leg, so I'm just holding out until I can afford to repair or just buy a new laptop.

I've heard of the bake method - anyone try this? Not sure if it would fix my issue or work for my macbook model but I'm willing to give it a shot.
