Macbook Pro 2010

15" Macbook Pro (2010) w/updated memory (8GB) and Crucial MX300 SSD 525GB, 2.4 i5

Running 10.11.6

Safari 11.0

Outlook (2011) 14.7.7

Once and a while the built in keyboard and trackpad stop working - typically I'll have Safari open and Outlook running - BUT if I plug in a USB device ( a keyboard or USB key) the keyboard and trackpad will 'come back' and work and continue to work till next time.

This can happen after a cold boot or even after the system being idle with the clamshell closed.

The upgrades (El Capitan, memory and SSD) were done some time ago the system has only started to 'act up' recently and while I could say this has started after system and app updates I would only guess at which updates (audioHijack, Little Snitch, Office and security updates come to mind)

Wonder where to start or what to look at?
