icloud email mail app

Strange thing happening today, I can't send emails from my icoud account using the mail app.

The sender address *******@icloud.com was rejected by the server p48-smtp.mail.me.com.

The server response was: Authentication required prior to MAIL/SAML/SEND/SOML

However, I can send email via my iphone connected to the same network. My other non icloud email accounts work fine. The icloud email was setup automatically when my mac was initially set up. I've tried removing the account then adding the account again but I still get the same problem.
