Macbook Pro suddenly right

Hi all. When I turned on my Macbook Pro today, I noticed that the trackpad suddenly ceased to left-click normally and instead right clicks. I restarted twice now with no change. I've tried disabling the secondary click and enabling tap-to-click to no avail. I've tried disabling the ctrl-click shortcut, no change whatsoever. I have even tried attaching a separate mouse instead of using the trackpad; the right click menu continues to pop up. Does anyone know what's going on?

I am running OSX Leopard on a 2009 Macbook Pro, if that at all helps.

Control key stuck?

Not to my knowledge. I tried disabling the ctrl key (by disabling all modifier keys under System Preferences) and the right click menu still pops up.

I should also mention that I have found that none of the alphabetical keys on the keyboard work. Every time they're pressed, an error sound plays. The numerical keys work fine.

If you can, try turning on Keyboard Viewer.

It is added to the MenuBar trhough either of these methods:

a) System Preferences > Languages &Text > Input Sources > [√] Show Input menu in MenuBar

b) System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard > [√] Show Input menu & Character viewer in MenuBar

Then choose "show Keyboard Viewer from the "Flag" Menu, and try pressing some keys.

Any keys that stay dark are stuck.

Ah, thank you. I tried that and I see that the ctrl key is indeed stuck. Though I have no idea why it would be so. Is there any way I can fix this without shelling out $1000+ for repairs?

Something interesting to note: I tried plugging in an external Mac keyboard and everything seems to work, including the left-click function. However, the ctrl key on the external is completely nonresponsive (I assume because the Macbook still thinks the laptop's ctrl key is being pressed).

I had this problem for some reason but I fixed it with one of these two solutions:

  • Run First Aid on Disk Utility
  • Turn off Bluetooth
