itunes freezes on opening

Recently updated to 12.7 for Windows.  Now whenever I open the app, it instantly freezes and is unresponsive.  No issues before the update.

Starting in safe mode has no effect - becomes unresponsive as soon as it opens as well.

This seems to be widespread problem across the web (lots of people reporting it).  One person seemed to indicate that the new version wants to start downloading  every podcast available, hence cant handle that amount of traffic.

I have been able to get it working when not connected to the internet - which is fine if you only want to back up your devices - but I want to manage my libraries, and get new podcasts etc.  A little difficult if not connected to internet.

As far as I am aware, all my drivers are up to date.

If anyone can fill me in as why this happening and how to fix, wouild e greatly appreciated.

Other specs: Windows 7 Home Prem / 64 bit.
