Swap out Xfinity router for airport Time Capsule?

I will be purchasing a new iMac and would like to get the Time Capsule for backup and networking. I have Xfinity and they supply a router for $10/month. I think I have already spent over $400 for this router. Will the Time Capsule replace the Xfinity router or will I have to wire the Time Capsule to my existing router? (Network newbie).

You most likely now have a Comcast Gateway device (combined modem and router). See: What is a Wireless Gateway from Comcast?

If you are going to get a Time Capsule you will also need to buy a modem. I recently replaced my Comcast gateway with an Arris SB6190 modem and a D-Link AC1900 router (you would use the Time Capsule instead of the D-Link router).
