Macbook gets the flashing folder upon startup a...

Recently (within the last month or so), my macbook air (2011) has been having issues. It started several weeks ago when occasionally it would shut down without warning and give that error message. About 2 weeks ago I got the flashing folder icon, about 2 times in 10 days. I was able to reboot in recovery mode and select the start up disk to fix the issue.

Today I got the flashing folder again and when I reboot I get the network recovery mode. After launching that and logging into our wifi and selecting start up disk selection I have no options for start up disks. I have a time machine backup from thursday which I want to save as a last resort.

What else can I do to fix this issue without using the TM backup? Is my hard drive dead?

Sounds like a dead or dying hard drive. If you can't use Disk Utility > First Aid in Recovery Mode you might try using Single User Mode. Boot holding the s key.

At the prompt enter:

/sbin/fsck -fy

This will run the same repairs on your hard drive as Disk Utility.
