iTunes (sometimes) can't find music on external...
I put all my music on an external hard drive. I set this location in Advanced Preferences/iTunes Media folder location. However, it find music sometimes and sometimes doesn't. I have no idea what makes some work and some not. When I look at the info as to where iTunes is looking for the file I find the following:
/Volumes/EXTERNAL_DRIVE/iTunes/Music/Band/Album/song1.mp3 (this one works)
file:///Volumes/EXTERNAL_DRIVE/iTunes/Music/Band/Album/song2.mp3 (this one doesn't)
What is going on? How do I correctly map my music without individually fixing 100,000s of songs?
In general it ought to work as long as the drive is ready before you start iTunes. If it isn't iTunes might treat some tracks as unavailable. If the tracks are in the expected layout then fixing one link, when iTunes show exclamation marks for others it thinks are missing, should let it fix them all. See Make a split library portable for advice on putting the library in a layout that is easy to backup, and restore when needed, and should be less likely to suffer from this issue.

I have iTunes v.12. I had previously moved everything from the iTunes folder on my local drive to the external drive and used the same names. I reset as described in step d. I couldn’t follow if you described doing anything other than that, but that doesn’t seem to work. I cannot move back on my local drive and start over since i don’t have the space.
Again, some albums work and some don’t. Though when I checked before they had the very minute differences in paths shown above. Now, the missing ones have paths to my local drive where they used to be. I have updated location to new drive in preferences/advanced, but some just refuse to change or it can’t find the new ones. Fixing one doesn’t fix any other songs. It asks “Would you like iTunes to use the location of “Song” to find other missing files in your library?”, but then it doesn’t find any - even songs in the same album/folder. I recall it finding them in the past, perhaps with earlier versions, but it does not do that anymore. It says I have 3,912 missing files it can’t locate. I’ve taken to just selecting all song files in an album and double clicking and then deleting the doubles in iTunes which have “!” on them. :-/
