Monthly Verizon Fee for Watch v.3?  What G...

Has anyone else experienced this??  I asked lots of questions prior to returning my Apple V2  for the V3 this past September... questions primarily around the cost for having cellular access on the new device.  I was assured by multiple apple customer support people via phone, and via chat that there would be no monthly charge for having cellular access via the Series 3 Watch.  I also contacted Verizon, whose customer service also said there would be no charge for the watch...  So I happily, went ahead with my purchase.

But behold, when I set up my watch today and signed into Verizon Cellular access (via the Watch), a monthly fee! Not to worry, Verizon stated that they would graciously waive the $10. Monthly access fee for the Watch for three whole months!  I feel bamboozled!  This fee is the equivalent line access fee for a full cellular device on the plan... this is ridiculous!  Needless to say, I will probably cancel it after the 3 months are up and have a useless & pricey SIM card on my wrist.   AHHHHH!

You did not get good information from whomever you spoke to at Apple or Verizon. All of the carriers are charging for that access. It is considered another device on their network, so they are going to get their money.

This information is from the Apple Watch page for purchases of the Apple Watch. Emphasis is mine.

Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) requires an iPhone 6 or later with iOS 11 or later. Wireless service plan required for cellular service. Apple Watch and iPhone service provider must be the same. Not available with all service providers. Not all service providers support enterprise accounts; check with your employer and service provider. Some legacy plans may not be compatible. Prepaid plans are not supported. Roaming is not available outside your carrier network coverage area. Contact your service provider for more details. Checkapple.com/watch/cellular for participating wireless carriers and eligibility.

Yes, Timing was the key here.  I purchased my new watch on the first order date at which time most of this information was not available.  I asked about the information in the notation that you pointed out, and both customer service agents assured me that this applied to the host device and that there would be no additional charge for adding the watch...when you clicked through to the Verizon site, no information was available - which was why I called.

I blame it on the lack of training and clarity of information provided to the agents at the time, because I don't believe that the carriers had actually decided in that time-frame what, and if, to charge at all... I understand that they are going to get their money, - but I do think they should have prepared better and that they are charging too much for a device with limited functionality.

I agree that many times customer service agents are not aware, but I do know that I had read all of the carriers were charging for the device, and most had agreed on the $10 fee, since that was equal to what they charge, at least for AT&T to connect an iPad to your data connection.

Either way, there is nothing that anyone here could do for you, but as you said, you can cancel that and the device will work the same as the regular Apple Watches do right now, tethered to your iPhone.
