Time machine back ups and encryption taking for...

I have a 2017 Macbook Pro running Sierra 10.12.5

I bought a 5TB external hard drive and partitioned 300GB for Time Machine Back ups. I chose to encrypt my time machine back ups. I thought it would just encrypt the folder of my Time Machine Back ups, but its actually encrypting the whole 300GB partition. If I want to add any folder to that partition it asks for my password. The problem is, its taking FOREVER to encrypt. I let it go over night and it still says "Encrypting back up disk" and its only at 46%. Its been 10 hours now. Is it supposed to take this long?

How do I unencrypt the 300GB partition and just encrypt the time machine back up folder?

The late James Pond wrote a wonderful set of illustrated article on Time machine and related subjects, like this one:

Encrypting AFTER doing a Backup is know to take a VERY long time.

Encrypting backups as you make them takes no extra time at all.

Is that what I did? I set up time machine and chose to encrypt the back ups when the option presented itself.

Is James Pond's article still  useful when running Safari.

When backing up, I am told to keep the MacBook plugged in to power. How can I keep my Macbook plugged in and still connect an external disk when there is only one USB-C inlet on the MacBook?
