iOS 11 ipad won’t change orientation

my iPad now won’t change orientation when I change how I hold it. This happens in apps and on the icon screen. It will bring the next icon screen or app window up in the new orientation though.  It just won’t transition to a new orientation while in a screen.

 

example: I’m looking at my homescreen icons in landscape and turn the iPad to portrait.  Nothing changes. If I open mail, it recognizes I’m in portrait and launches in portrait. Now, turn the iPad to landscape again and the Mail app will stay in the portraIt. It won’t transition to landscape. Go to another app or the home screen and it will be in the correct mode.  So, my gyro is working since it knows what the right perspective is but won’t transition any apps.
