Force iCloud to download all photos to iPhone a...

Had an iPhone 6 with a cracked screen and we opted to upgrade today to an iPhone 8

From the hello screen once the new phone was powered up, I chose to restore from an iCloud backup. Let it run for about 3 hours. It made great incremental progress the whole way, until the last 1 or 2 percentage points (I'm estimating since it doesn't give a number -- it was just a teensy bit short of the end of the progress bar). I let that last 1 or 2 points run for a couple hours and then gave up.

Reset, and it powered up just fine, opened up iOS, and began syncing all the apps and data that weren't on the phone.

It is done with its sync. I verified this by going into Settings > Backup, and it no longer gives the option to stop the current restore whereas it previously told me how many GB of apps and data it was syncing.

Unfortunately, it did not sync any of my old photos from the iCloud backup. Photos is still empty, a few hours after finishing all the rest above.

Double checking the photos still stored on the old phone sitting next to me, when I log in to icloud.com from my desktop, I can see 100% of all the photos are there.

The new phone's photos sync with iCloud configured as follows:

  • iCloud Photo Library ON
  • Optimize iPhone Storage CHECKED
  • Upload to My Photo Stream ON
  • Upload Burst Photos OFF
  • iCloud Photo Sharing ON

What can I do to make iCloud download fresh copies of all the photos stored in iCloud? I would prefer the originals, but I'll take optimized versions if it's all I can do.

If I have no choice but to reset all the contents & settings on my new phone and try the restore a second time, I will. But I would prefer to try and force iCloud to resync its photos to this phone. It seems to be the only data that did not sync to the new phone.
