@me account not working on other clients

I have a catch 22 situation.

I've got an old @me account (linked to my real iCloud account but is not used as my primary account). That is however the email account I've been using for 8 years+.

Ever since the two-factor requirement for 3rd party apps, I can no longer log into any other mail client with this account. I log into appleid.apple.com and there's an option to enable Two Factor auth but it asks me to do so on a Mac or iPhone. I login into my iPhone with this account and it tells me two-factor auth is not available on this account.

What do I do!!? I can't enable two factor auth and I can't create an app specific password - I can no longer use this email with me favourite email clients. How do I make this work?
