iMac running really slow after High Sierra upgrade

My iMac had been running slow already, but now that I have upgraded to High Sierra, it's really bad.

It's an iMac 21.5', Late 2013, 2.7 Ghz Intel Core i5

One thing I've been curious about when I noticed the slowness is that my partner has tons of files on his desktop when he switches to his User partition, and I had wondered if having all those documents on there is slowing things up as it has to render each of them on the desktop. Been trying to get him to move them to folders.

Switching between users takes forever, and apps are taking forever to load.

Any other ideas are appreciated, or let me know if my iMac is too old for High Sierra to work well.

As a general rule of  thumb NEVER EVER install a major upgrade on a system that is not already performing well. Doing so just makes trouble shooting much more difficult.

My apologies.  I'm new to this.  Seemed redundant to start a new thread on exactly the same problem.  Is that the proper protocol?  I can certainly do that.

Yes it is as the symptoms may be the same but the cause may be diffferent. Thank you for asking, that was considerate of you.

Thanks for coming back so promptly.  It is best to start a new thread whenever you have done an etrecheck and found potential problems.   Two of these reports in one thread can be very confusing and the systems and contents are rarely the same.   Start a new thread by saying what your main problems are and add the report at the bottom..
