Retrieve erased document from Downloads?

I highlighted a part of a text in Downloads and then mistakenly hit the space bar instead of Command/C.  That part of the text disappeared.  Can I retrieve it somehow?  MacBook Air.  Thank you.

Have you tried Command + Z?

Open in TextEdit. Then go to the Text Edit menu > File > Revert To > Previous State

Greetings and thanks.  Can you tell me how to open the document in Text Edit?  I am lost. 

No, I hadn't done that.  I just tried and nothing happened.  Maybe I did it wrong.  Thanks though.

Right-click > Open With, and choose TextEdit.
