Apple Watch 3 not pairing with Mazda 6

Bluetooth looks like it tries to connect.  The code displays on both the watch and the Mazda 6 but then I get a message ‘unable to connect - unknown error’.

 

I’ve tried it a few times - restarted the car, turned Bluetooth off and on the watch, I’m on the most recent watch version as well.  Any ideas? I haven’t contacted Mazda yet but I doubt they’ll be of much help.

Whilst some users have reported success with pairing Apple Watch with certain car Bluetooth systems, Apple advises that iPhone, iPad and iPod touch are the only devices that are designed for use with car audio systems.

 

Apple Watch can be paired with compatible Bluetooth headphones and Bluetooth speakers, but it is not designed to be paired with car audio systems:

Same but 2016 CX-5. Multiple attempts on different days. Even reset watch.
