connect to remote mac using apple id fails

Hi all,

I installed Sierra on my Macs and after doing this I have problems connecting from computer to computer over my LAN.

At first it worked with the following "hiccups":

- It took a long time to connect.

- When connected it did not say "Connected as <appleid>", instead it said "Connected as com.apple.idms.appleid.prd.<lotsofcharacters>

- Finder showed duplicates of the mounted folders, both the Swedish versions (such as "<users> delade mapp" and the English version "<users> public folder" (I am running Mac OS in Swedish...).

I did some checking around the net and finally I used the "advanced settings" of the user/groups panel to disconnect the user from the iCloud account, and then reconnect to the iCloud account again (same on both computers of course).

After doing this the two aliases that were displayed (in the same advanced user settings dialog, below the apple id information) disappeared.

One of them was the iCloud id and the other was the "com.apple.idms...." string displayed earlier after connecting.

After this the connection no longer works, unless I click "connect as" and enter my credentials. Trying "connect using Apple ID" in the "connect as" dialog does not work. There is some attempt (it takes some time), but then it fails.

Putting the aliases back does not help.

A friend of mine has a similar problem, the connection showing the "connected as com.apple.idms....", but he has not tried to remove any settings.

I was just wondering if someone else has some problems with this, indicating that it could be a bug in Sierra?

I tried to search the forums but did not find anything conclusive.

Thanks for reading! =)

Hey JsonLu,

Thanks for upgrading to macOS Sierra! If you're having some issues with remoting in your other Mac over your LAN connection, try using the information in the link below for some troubleshooting steps to resolve this peculiar issue.

Remote Desktop Help: Network Guidelines

Let us know how it works out for you. Have a great weekend!

Hi!

Thanks for your reply! Unfortunately I did not find anything to help my problem.

Maybe I was a bit confusing in my post, but the thing is that I am not using the "remote desktop" app, I am "just" using the built in functionality in the Finder to connect to file sharing and screen sharing.

This is a short summary (please note I am using macOS in Swedish, so the texts etc below are translated by me back to English, they might not be exactly the same as in the English version):

- Two computers.

- One is the "server" a Mac Mini, the (standard) user account is associated with my AppleID. File sharing and screen sharing are enabled.

- The second, the "client" a Macbook (2016), with the user account (also a standard account) associated with the same AppleID.

I open a Finder window on the client and I immediately see the server in the side bar. I click the server and get a message "connecting..." that stays visible for up to 30 seconds. It is then replaced by "Not connected".

I click the "Connect as..." button in the window, it again says "connecting..." for a fairly long time and then I am presented with a dialog with three possibilities for connection.

I click "using an AppleID" and click "connect", there is a "spinner" displayed and after a few seconds the dialog "shakes" to tell me the connection failed.

If I instead use the "as a registered user" alternative and give my server user name and password the connection is established. After connecting the window displays the user home folder and the public folders of each user. For each user account two public folders are displayed, one with the Swedish name ("delade mapp") and one with the English name ("public folder")

I tried to dis-associate and re-associate the AppleID with the user account (using the "advanced settings" dialog in the user/groups system settings pane) but to no avail (I rebooted both computers after each change).

Before the dis-/re-associating of AppleID to user account, the "Alias" box of the "advanced settings" dialog contained two items, my AppleID and the com.apple.idms.appleid.prd.<lotsofstuff> keychain key (it seems to point to a certificate in the keychain). After dis-/re-assocation these "aliases" were gone.

Adding them back manually did not help.

I tried to log out of my iCloud account, and back in, on both the server and client, but it did not help.

This automatic AppleID based connection worked flawlessly up to and including Mac OS X 10.11.

Regards from Sweden!

Just an addition.

I got rid of the "double public folders" problem by going into the Mac OS Server App File Sharing settings and removing all the folders (two per user) and then re-add them (one public folder per user then of course).

But the "connection by Apple ID" problem still persists.

I wonder if it could be something wrong with some certificate? I can't see that any certificate has expired, but I have a set of asps certificates that are marked as "given by untrusted authority" (even though they seem to be received from Apple).

I also checked the certificate pointed to by the com.apple.idms.appleid.prd.<lotsofstuff> keychain key and it says it has no root certificate. I don't know if it should have one though...

Unfortunately I know very little about certificates so I can't say if this has any bearing on my problems.

Since I can connect using user account credentials, but not AppleID, possibly any certificate problems would concern some AppleID/iCloud certificate(s)...?

Hi JsonLu

I have exactly the same issue as you and it has been driving me nuts!  So much so I restored my iMac back to El Capitain to make sure I wasn't mistaken and I was not.  My systems  1 x MacBook Pro running Mavericks, 1 x iMac running El Cap, 1 x MacBook Air running Mavericks all connected flawlessly to each other and to a Time Capsule.  When I re-upgraded(!) iMac to Sierra the "com.apple.idms.appleid.prd" returned and the systems no longer worked well together.  Servers randomly dropped their connections and IDs didnt work.

To add insult to injury I am currently working in Melbourne and I cannot connect back to my systems at home in the UK using Back To My Mac.

Like you I believe the issue seems to be linked to AppleID/iCloud certificate(s) but am no expert in these matters.

Have you had any luck in resolving your/our problem?

Kind regards

BazW

Hi BazW!

Thanks for the info! Interesting to see that it works when you reinstall an older version of macOS.

Sorry to hear about your problems, and unfortunately I haven't had any luck with this issue.

For screen sharing I use a third party app that lets me connect over the internet without back to my Mac.

I have some hope they'll fix it in the next macOS update but that's about it.

If they don't I might try to get in the macOS beta program and give feedback or try to contact them some other way. This must be fixed and I can't imagine they don't know about it.

Hi JsonLu

Before I came out to Oz I spoke to Apple support in the UK, they were no help as they had never seen this problem before.  Like you I can't imagine we are the only people who have/are suffering this problem so hopefully it will be fixed in a future release.

In the mean time when I get home I will be downgrading back to El Capitain and, when I've worked out how to, will raise a fault with Apple.  I'll be in touch if I get any further info that might be of help to you.

Kind regards

BazW

Hi BazW,

Hmm... maybe I'm being a bit cynical here but I think it's quite often support has never heard about the problem even though quite a few have reported it here or on other forums... (like my current problem with email, where push notifications for one of my four iCloud accounts are not delivered to any of my iOS devices, but everything is OK on my Macs... and the other three accounts are OK on all devices... guess I'm looking forward to iOS 10.2 too... but I digress...).

If 10.12.2 does doesn't fix it I think I'll try to re-install Sierra (clean install) to see if I will at least get the "user account iCloud aliases" back so I can connect, even if it will report the strange ....prd.... stuff as the connected user.

And then the beta program feedback and/or support contact..

I'd love to get more info if you find something so thanks in advance for that. =)

I will also write here if there are any further developments or information from some other source.

Kind regards,

JsonLu

Hi JsonLu

Got back to the UK at the weekend so hopefully I'll be rolling my iMac back to El Capitain if I get time later this week.  It's really strange how just having the one system on Sierra screws up remote access to my Time Capsule, I know when my iMac is running on El Cap everything will work again.

Anyway, like you I am waiting for 10.12.2 and I'll see if that cures the problem.  If not, my next move was also going to be a clean install, great minds think alike.

I sounds like we have a similar set up that goes beyond just our macs as I too have sync problems with email.  My problem involves emails I receive in an Exchange account that are filed in iCloud not syncing on my iPad.  These emails sync perfectly on both macs (irrespective of the El Cap/Sierra issue) and my iPhone but often never appear on my iPad.

I'll make sure you are the first to know if I get a breakthrough but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Kind regards

Barry

Hi Barry,

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately no progress here at my end.... :-/

The mails started "pushing" again yesterday though, not because of anything I did. Oh well, suppose that is progress.

On the other hand the watch missed my "perfect" (oh how I don't like that word in this context...) month (November) even though I completed all goals every day... a first world problem for sure, but since I have all full months beginning June 2015 I got a bit bummed...

Guess I now hope for watchOS fixes as well...

Kind regards

Sture

I'm having a com.apple.idms.appleid.prd. as well but a bit different.  I have a airport extreme that i use and I have it set up with the two networks one with is  Shorton's wi-fi network and the other Shorton's wi-fi network 5G.  I can now only log onto the 5G one from my mac mini.  I have 2 mac pro laptops and a couple iPhones.  The only one that can't access is the Mac Mini.  It first started with I'm not putting three wrote password to access the network meanwhile everything is online and I'm accessing it but this annoying box kept popping up.  On one if the support answers for this was tho enter the airport base station name where it was asking for name and then the network password.  It didn't work. I was seeing what was in the user part of system preferences and i found myself in the Directory Utility. I had no idea about this so I click on the top where they have 3 icons. 1 for services  another for Search Policy and then Directory Editor. well Directory Editor sounded the most interesting being the one that you could do the most damage in.  I'm looking through it and I see my name and i click on it and it opens a box  next to it.  It has all kind of information in it and theres a RealName and under it is RecordName with an arrow to click on not and it has my mac mini user name, my apple ID and lo and behold the com.apple.idms.appleid.prd.etc, is the 3rd RecordName.  then in the column next to it there is a + button.  Which i have not touched.  Like I said I think it would be easy to do a lot of damage here.

What I'm wondering is can we delete the (com.apple.idms.appleid.prd.) name? Would that help or would it cause a disaster.  And what is the + button for.  It is he only thing with + button next it. So hopefully someone who knows a lot more than I do can hopefully give an answer that might help. Thank you.

Hi Shortonnyc

As far as I can tell it is 'normal' to have an Alias 'com.apple.idms.appleid.prd.nnnnnnnn' associated with an AppleID.  What is abnormal is having it displayed when connecting to another Mac's disk.  As for deleting the entry in Directory Editor I wouldn't like to give any advice as I hadn't seen nor was I aware Directory Editor existed until I read your comments.

By way of update for both you and JsonLu, since my last email I have indeed rolled back my iMac to El Capitan with the expected result of everything working fine, connecting all my systems and using BTMM without a hitch.  I have also just bought a new MacBook Pro which came loaded with Sierra 10.12.2 and, yes you guessed it, the problem has returned, i.e. all my Mac's that aren't running Sierra are connecting fine either as a 'Registered user' or using my AppleID.  However, when I connect my new MBP to my iMac using my AppleID it connects but displays the alias 'com.apple.idms.appleid.prd.nnnnnnnn' and I can only connect my iMac to new MBP as a 'Registered user'.

I have spoken to an Apple engineer and we have tried all kinds of different things including deleting ID's and Aliases all to no avail.  I am now awaiting the results of their investigations into the log files they requested.

As soon as I have anything concrete to report I'll post again.

Kind regards

Barry

HI all!

Thanks for the update Barry. So then there is no reason for me to re-install 10.12.2 from scratch...

Really looking forward to hearing what Apple have to say about this.

Shortonnyc, thanks for the info on the directory service, I'll have a look into that. Even if it won't fix my problems, at least it would be good to familiarise myself with it.

Regarding the com...prd stuff I want to add that I lost the alias when removing my Apple ID from my user, and it did not come back when I added the Apple ID again. When it was removed so was the ability to connect at all with Apple ID.

i tried to add the alias manually (it is the key of one of the certificates in the login keychain) but that did not help.

Kind regards,

Sture

Hi JsonLu

Thought I'd give you an update.......

I decided to give Apple support another try off the back of setting my new MBP.  To cut a very long story short I ended up dealing with a senior tech who was extremely helpful.  After running many different tests requested by the developers it appears there have been similar reported faults that will require a software update to fix.

In my discussions with the senior tech, there has already been an Airport update that was supposed to fix this problem which in my case has not worked and clearly has not worked for others.  If you use and Airport or Time Capsule you might want to update the firmware to the latest version if you haven't done so already.

As your problem seems to be the same as mine hopefully when the fix is applied we will have a resolution.  As to when that update will be released, I wasn't given any dates.

If I get any more info regarding the fix i'll pass it on to you.

Kind regards

Barry

Hi BazW,

Very interesting information, thank you!

Needless to say I haven't gotten any further towards a solution so I will probably "give up" and wait for the next update.

If there are any more findings I will definitely update this thread.

Kind regards,

Stu
