Use both iMessages and Texts

Often I don’t have reception and I keep my data turned off. I message my husband on iMessages, but when I leave WiFi and get reception again, my phone still sends him iMessages which then don’t get sent. It’s a hassle when I’m trying to be quick about it. Is there a way to use both without turning one or the other off?
