Read posts on setting up email

Hi,

I used to send and receive email on my old iMac 10.6.8.  But recently it malfunctioned and I've been trying to set it up again. 

Mac Mail does not set up "server hostname" automatically (at least not the correct one) as apple support mail settings document states. "Automatically added for iOS & OS X Mail."

I keep getting this message:  Logging in to the MobileMe IMAP server “mail.me.com” failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn’t correct, you cannot receive messages.

I know my Apple email and I know my password. I had to have it to get on this forum also.  And I use it on my MacBook Air.

What I can't figure out or locate on google is the actual incoming mail server. 

I've tried mail.me.com? mail.mac.com? mail.icloud.com?  None of those work.

Then I tried imap.mac.com? me/icloud 

I can't log in to MobileMe because it's nonexistent.

My iMac computer is OS 10.6.8 (and to reiterate:  I HAVE had mail on this computer many times -- just that one day it malfunctioned for some reason and now I cannot get it back). 

P.S.  I looked under ALL the communities to POST to and there is nothing for Mail on iMac.  I do have Mac Mail on my MacBook Air and the account is listed as iCloud and 9 more . . . I clicked on that to see if I could find any settings to duplicate on my iMac -- nothing under detail except my email address.

Just hitting a brick wall here.  Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.
