How does one know, when purchasing a Watch (Series 3) app, whether it functions stand-alone or requires iphone proximity?

If necessary, contact the app developer to ask them directly.

On the Apple website, if it says LTE it means that it can be used alone. If it doesn't say this, then you'll need your phone to make it work.
