Help with iTunes movies failing to run on iPad

Would appreciate any help with this one! I have an iPad mini 4 and there is no software update available. When I rent a movie directly from iTunes on the iPad and attempt to play it for the first time, if I'm not on wifi, a black screen comes up for a few seconds and the movie won't play. It will return to the video rental pop up screen. This has been a pain while on airplanes. If I can remember to open and begin the rental while on wifi somewhere then pause the movie and resume it off of wifi, the movie will play. Obviously not a big deal but a pain if I forget to initiate the rentals on wifi. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance!!!
