magsafe charger no longer works after performin...
i'm troubleshooting my 17" late 2011 macbook pro, which has the grey screen of death. Disk utility said the disk was ok, however it still won't start. I tried safebooting it, and the loading bar filled to completion, but it didn't start. i'm now in single user mode, repeatedly using fsck- fy, and it keeps telling me the volume was modified.
i tried the nvram reset by holding down option, command, p and r while starting. the charger was in the magnetic slot while i was doing this, now there is no green light and no charge.
my other charger does work in the same mac. the charger in question does not work in either my befuddled mac or my running mac which i'm posting from.
Hi,
It sounds like you've done the basic troubleshooting for your power adapter and it's shot. I can't see how a PRAM reset would have done that though.
Beyond that, I'm not sure what help you're looking for. Please be more specific as to what you want us to help you with and we'll give it a try.
there's a hole at the block-end of the thinner wire, so i guess it just overheated, but strange this happened just as i performed the pram reset.
i cannot seem to reboot my mac after trying to fix it through single user mode. the same error message is coming up. it appears that i'll have to an smc reset.
That does seem like quite a coincidence, but as I said before, can't see how PRAM could do it.
Go ahead with the SMC, it can't hurt.
that hole actually happens to be present on the charger that is working
That's not good. Too bad it isn't the other way around. Hate to say it, but you should get a new power adapter, maybe two if/when the MBP with the issue comes around.
restarted said mac. it killed my other charger
is this the first instance you've heard of a corrupted mac killing power adapters upon starting?
You're kidding, right?
If not, exactly what happened, in what order?
Again, if this is the case, that machine is dangerous and I would stop working on it with any power supplied to it.
Positively.
And I can't even imagine how that would happen. It's supposed to be a one-way circuit; power comes in through AC to power adapter which converts it to low voltage, goes into power supply in MBP, NOT supposed to be able to come back out through charging circuit.
as much as i'd like to be joking, i'm not.
so this mac stopled working 3/4 months ago. i went through the same steps i went through today to get it running, starting in safe mode, pram reset, single command mode, to no avail. since it wasn't my main computer i figured i could wait to sort it out. today i did exactly the same steps, thinking that doing fsck -fy a few more times might get it going.
earlier on tonight, as i was moving from safe mode attempt to pram attempt, it was unplugged and low on battery. somehow after sitting for weeks without a single charge the battery still had at least 6%, as there was 1 green light on the side (not flashing). before i did pram reset i plugged it in, got the green light, booted the computer, and the adapter was shot. i thought it was the command that did it.
i took out the plug and started it so i could perform single command mode, tried that for an hour, and then used the command "reboot in safe mode" while the working charger was plugged in. i was surprised to find that this killed the other charger.
i plugged it into my working mac, and the green light flashed briefly. i tried using it again in the corrupted mac for smc reset, but when i tried starting the computer (which i could not do without holding the button for ten seconds), the charger failed and the computer now fails to turn on at all. the battery indicator light flashes.
i think i should take the computer to the apple store, though it was bought from a third party and is 5 years past manufacturing.
i think trying to save this computer is futile, and this must be very rare. could a virus have caused this, or defective hardware?
i really appreciate your commitment to my concern
I agree that trying to repair this would not be a good idea. There is a MagSafe DC-In Board in this model of Mac that can be replaced, but it's a very difficult procedure, the board costs $45, and the cost of another power adapter, which, frankly, I would be afraid to try on this machine, as I guess the issue (which I still can't imagine) could be in the logic board itself. So you're talking over $100 with nothing close to a guarantee that it would work anyway. And if it didn't, and you wanted to continue, then it's a used logic board, plus potentially another power adapter and DC-In Board. It just doesn't make sense.
I can't imagine how that conversation would go at an Apple Store "genius" bar, but what can it hurt to try? If you go, I would bring along both chargers, the "bad" MBP and the working one.
Rare? I'd be very surprised it the "genius" had ever heard of this before, but of course I could be wrong. Certainly I've never seen a post/issue like this come through here, nor in any of my hands-on experience.
Virus vs hardware? Hardware. I can't begin to fathom how a virus (which are practically unheard of in the wild/beyond proof of concept) could do this (although you see things like this on Windows machines in TV shows, a virus blowing up whole computers, rooms full or computers, server farms, printers, routers, etc., but then, they're TV shows and there's a lot of unrealistic content on them).
A failed DC-in board could conceivably damage the power adapter's serial communications device. I have never heard of that happening but it's certainly possible.
Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters - Apple Support
thank you folks. i'll give a status update when i return from the apple store.
the genius bar provided me with a new power adapter, and were expectedly unwilling to try and operate the machine. they said repair could cost anywhere between $250-450 (through them) and wouldn't be worth it since the product is close to being vintaged.
