I’m inheriting a iMac with OS X 10.5 leop...

Will that still be able to run most things up to date ?? I’m sorry this would be the first iMac I’d ever used ! Not even sure what Os is the most current and if these are like the iPhones will all the apps still run on maybe outdated Os ??? I’m not sure and searching for help thank you

When you pose questions like this, it is very helpful to know just what iMac is involved. Click  menu : About This Mac. What appears for these items:

Yosemite 10.10, El Capitan 10.11, Sierra 10.12, and coming soon High Sierra.

I'm running Yosemite and it's current enough.  You can run the current version of Firefox, and Chrome.  The native web browser safari works on the web, but no longer is updated by apple.

You would need to buy the lion dvd for about twenty dollars. You need to install lion and all lion updates to be able to use the app store to then download and install el capitan.

I have run el capitan on a 2008 imac.  El capitan runs too slow for me with 4gig of memory.  I run lion on the machine.  I use the esr version of Firefox on the machine.

Based on Apple's historical three-year sliding window of security updates, Yosemite may very well drop out of the support cycle when High Sierra is released.
