MBP 2016 w/external monitor in clamshell = crash

100% repeatable way to crash a 2016 MBP:

 

  1. Put the MBP to sleep by closing the lid
  2. Attach power supply (original Apple)
  3. Attach an external monitor (in this case 4k monitor with USB-C <> DisplayPort cable)
  4. Clamshell mode should activate, but instead the MBP crashes and needs to be force rebooted via power button

 

Workaround:

  • Open the lid before attaching the external monitor
  • I suspect if I dispable the integrated GPU that might help, too, but have not tried

 

What Apple Support says: "tough, maybe we fix this in the future".

 

Any ideas for fixing this permamently? Having to open the lid every time is annoying.

Apparently macOS 10.12.3 fixed the crash part. No picture while attaching an external monitor (that requires opening the lid), but at least it is not crashing anymore.

My 100% repeatable way is as follows (on a 2017 MBPr running 10.13 High Sierra):

  1. Begin with a stable (apparently) install of MacOS 10.13 (17A405), having been started up from a closed clamshell MacBook Pro (open the cover, push to power button for 3 sec, close the cover and wait for the restart). Use one or two external displays connected via USB-C.
  2. After CPU load becomes stable (Activity Monitor), check to see that some Apple apps are open and fully functional (Mail, Contacts, Messages, Calendar).
  3. Check to see that all (2) screens function with their preset parameters (resolution, arrangement menubar location setting in System Preferences).
  4. Open the cover.
  5. If the screens stay blank upon opening, over five seconds, then that’s the issue.
  6. Keyboard Touch Bar frozen, no cursor, any keyboard (internal, external), trackpads inoperative.
  7. It will NEVER recover on its own from there (hours).
  8. Restart is needed. No workarounds from there.
