Questioning the performance of Metal

Few years ago when Apple maintained that Metal is going to have a great impact on gaming on mac, and they asked epic game to show how they benefited from metal. I did download fortnite on my 2016 13-inch macbook pro last week, but the experience is nothing close to what Apple has been saying these days. Do anyone feel Metal is going to make a huge difference or it's just a gimmick?
