Delete Key Quirky

I have had this problem intermittently for a couple years it seems. I've always just dealt with it, but it would be nice if I could find a proper solution.

In any application, occasionally my delete button doesn't work when I try to delete text.  Originally I thought it might be due to debris under the key.  But if I hit another key, usually an arrow key, the delete key then works.  This solution works every time, which is why I never bothered to find the real cause.

I've searched several forums but no one seems to describe exactly the problem I'm encountering.  Any idea what could be causing this?

I'm using a mid-2012 MBP 13".  This is the built-in keyboard, no external devices attached.  This problem has occurred over every OS I've had since I got it in 2014, including the current 10.12.6.
