Do mac users need to download java? I have vers...

I am always prompted to download Java, but don't really know what it is. Is Java save and should I be downloading it periodically?

Java is a programming language and a run-time environment which programs written in Java run under.

Java runs in 2 different ways.  As a program it is just another application and is as safe as any other application you download.  That is to say do you trust the developer that wrote the application?

The second way it is run, is in a web browser.  Current thinking is that this way of running Java code is unsafe, and if you have a Java extension/plug-in for your browser that allows you to run Java, you should disable that browser extension/plug-in.

The reason running Java via the web browser is that the code is downloaded from the web, and if Java is enabled in the browser, even web Ads could be downloading code to run.  _AND_, too many flaws in the Java extensions/plug-ins have been found that allow Java code to escape the web browser sandbox and affect your computer as a whole.

This is totally different from deciding to use a respected application from a respected developer that was written in Java.  In the case of a well respected application and developer, Java is just any other programming language and totally safe.

Some Banks have mistakenly required Java to connect with them.  If you happen to be using a Bank or financial institution that has a requirement you allow Java in your web browser, you should look for a different Bank.
